O NAACP Image Awards é uma premiação concedida anualmente pela National Association for the Advancement of Colored People para os afro-americanos mais influentes do cinema, televisão e música do ano. "Straight Outta Compton - A História do N.W.A." vence na categoria Outstanding International Motion Picture, enquanto Michael B. Jordan ganha tanto na categoria de Melhor Ator pelo filme "Creed - Nascido para Lutar" como na categoria Entertainer of the Year.

Nas principais categorias de TV, reinaram as séries "Empire", da Fox, e "black-ish", da ABC. Esta última ganhou o prêmio de melhor comédia, bem como os principais prêmios de atuação para suas estrelas, Tracee Ellis-Ross e Anthony Anderson. Anderson também sediou a cerimônia, que foi transmitida ao vivo pela TV One do Civic Auditorium Pasadena. O cantor e compositor John Legend recebeu o prêmio President's Awards.

O 47º NAACP Image Awards chega em um momento que Hollywood está focada na questão da diversidade na indústria, sobretudo levando em conta a falta de candidatos negros indicados ao Oscar pelo segundo ano consecutivo.
